FOR OLDER ADULTS WITH DEMENTIA

LIVING IN THE PRESENT is a guidebook of visual and verbal exploration for older adults with dementia using age appropriate, relevant materials and approaches.

THIS GUIDEBOOK CONTAINS:

  • 8 themed sections including travel, food and seasons, each section beginning with a sample reading
  • Over 80 full page colour photographs plus corresponding black and white templates for use
  • Discussion questions designed to stimulate interest and conversation
  • Step by step instructions for using the guidebook
  • Suggested art materials

‘Guides’ can include human services professionals, practitioners, creative arts therapists, educators, life coaches, mental health counsellors, psychotherapists, spiritual care providers, and others who seek to connect with and enable a positive sense of self for older adults challenged with dementia. The goal is for the ‘Guides’ to treat older adults with dementia as ‘Travellers’ on a path to greater self-esteem through active participation.

LIVING IN THE PRESENT benefits individuals as well as groups where participants are at varying levels of ability. Though this guidebook has been designed specifically for older adults with dementia, it is also beneficial with other populations such as neurodiverse populations.

The author Esther Zeller Cooper, has created the photographs and images in this guidebook.

Markets

Markets have existed for thousands of years.  This is where people gather to buy, sell or trade many different items, such as food, flowers, utensils and more.  They can be both indoors and outdoors and can operate daily or weekly depending on the population and the culture.

Designated marketplaces have become important sites of historic and architectural significance, and some cities consider their markets to be a major cultural asset as well as a popular tourist destination.

In recent years Farmers’ Markets have become very popular with a growing desire to encourage and support the local food movement.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

What will these people do with the apples they purchase?

What other food might be purchased at this market?

If they were having a conversation, what would they be saying?

This guidebook enables older adults with dementia to participate and exercise many brain functions. They are empowered by actively participating and creating accomplishments that promote recognition, validation and heightened self-esteem.
